Slow disk access inside a VMware Virtual Machine

by Igloo on Oct 29th in VMware

Right, I’ve had this happen to me, I’m running linux (Ubuntu 8.04) inside a Ubuntu 64 bit host. I’ve been experiencing some very slow disk access times from inside the clients.

This would manifest itself as slow access times for the cacti install i have running, Pages taking a long time to load, This web server’s Apache instance taking a lot longer than it should to load.

The fix is quite simple: Disable write caching for the hard disk.

In the VMware server management console: Power down the Virtual Machine, Then go to the settings, Select hard disk, go to advanced, Untick Write Caching.
Restart the Virtual Machine, Enjoy faster hard disk access times!

That’s it, A really simple fix, to an annoying problem.

Happy leeching!
